A discussion on Health Related Issues and Interventions for School Age Children - Research Paper Example A number of health related issues arise at this age and their successful mitigation helps children develop normally into adolescent and adulthood. Without proper measure in place to address these health related issues, developmental problems may arise ranging from behavioural problems to physical and mental problems. This paper is going to look at a number of child health related problems such as childhood obesity and overweight issues, bullying, accidents and injuries, social network and the media, child abuse and neglect and the various interventions that could be employed to either prevent or lessen the impacts of these issues on school age children. Childhood obesity and overweight Last year, the Australia bureau of statistics reported the continued rise of childhood obesity over the last 40 years. The report indicated that the level of childhood obesity has increased substantially and is even projected to approach adult rates within 30 years. The report showed that 26.1% of chil dren between the ages of 5-15 were overweight or obese in 2007-08. In 2009 the same was 26.5% making a 0.4% increase in one year (ABS, 2011). The report attributed this rise to sedentary pursuits which include watching television and playing computer games. In 2005 the world health organization reported that 20 million children under 5 years were overweight. Latest statistics by the World health organization also indicate that 40 million children under the age of five years are overweight or suffer from obesity in 2010. These statistics are quite alarming making the issue a global concern (WHO, 2012). Scholars argue that overweight and obesity in childhood especially in older children can lead to serious and severe obesity and weight issues in adulthood. They also say that childhood and adolescent obesity poses a higher risk of premature death and disability later on in life (Kumanyika & Brownson, 2007, p. 51). Literature also suggests children who are obese or overweight normally e ncounter several physical risks and are at a greater risk of social isolation. Such children also are at the risk of developing psychological disorders than those who are in a healthy weight range (Vichuda L Mathews, 2011, pp. 4-6: Justin, 2005, p.84). Research also indicates other consequences of overweight and obesity and these include the development of chronic conditions such as chronic respiratory problems such as sleep apnoea and breathlessness; chronic musculoskeletal problems such as lower back pains and osteoarthritis; gall bladder disease and impaired fertility and well as chronic cardiovascular problems (Dehghan, Akhtar-Danesh, & Merchant, 2005, p. 24). Scholars have proposed a number of strategies in which childhood obesity could be reduced. Such intervention measures have been in existence for quite some time now. Their application is case specific and some could still be applied to solve the problem generally. Telford et al. (2012, 371 )in their study found out that an appropriately designed and administered physical education program (PE) is capable of producing benefits for elementary school children by reducing the percentage increase of body fat but also led to significant enhancement of numeracy development. Other studies have also supported the idea of physical education in helping in the primary prevention of overweight and obesity. Davis et al. (2012, p. 243) in their study propose school based initiatives that include physical activity and also provide opportunities for physical education and recess programs as very important in the prevention of obesity. Tim O’Brien’s â€Å"How to tell a True War Story†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  According to the author Tim O’Brien, people tend to readily accept the ‘facts’ presented of what happened during a war. People do not consider the existence of fallacies regarding the actual stories of what happens in wars, few consider that the ‘facts’ of an incident often change through people’s words. The film ‘Saving the Private Ryan’ by Steven Spielberg features both facts and seemingness part of the war story. Since it is so difficult to fully describe a war using human language, Spielberg ended up revising his stories to make sense out of it. Spielberg included parts that did not occur or exclude parts that did occur in order to make their stories seem more credible. According to Tim O’Brien’s text â€Å"How to tell a True War Story,† he suggests that people must break out of listening to traditional war stories and scrutinize unbelievable and contradictory aspects of war stories, whi ch is a more accurate way to obtain the truth about a war. Chacter Sketch Miss Brill Essay

Katherine Mansfield illustrates in the story the protagonist Miss Brill as a middle aged women with no family that believes she has a social life, which consists of watching other people interact with each other. Mansfield parallels Miss Brill with the fur she keeps wrapped up in a box until Sunday. She demonstrates a dynamic character that receives a reality check from the â€Å"real† world where she belongs rather than in a chimerical world she made up. Mansfield creates a colorful character who symbolizes her old, worn fur and lacks the reality of the outside world. Mansfield’s parallelism between Miss Brill and her fur shows the reader that Miss Brill stays in a box in a dark closet until Sunday when she â€Å"acts† in the play of the outside world. Mansfield describes the fur’s eyes asking â€Å"what has happened to me?† as Miss Brill had to â€Å"rub some life back into its dim little eyes † after it sat in the box for some period of time. Just like the fur Miss Brill stays bottled up in box in her apartment until Sunday when she goes to watch the band play. Both the fur and Miss Brill have aged and do not leave their perimeter until Miss Brill’s cue to enter the stage of the world. The outside world helps to sculpt Miss Brill into a dynamic charter. The realization of the outside world and her view change on the world around her allows her to wed the name of a dynamic character. Miss Brill forms a world of her own that she lives through. She sees all of the people she observes as â€Å"just coming from dark, little rooms or even- even cupboards. † In reality Miss Brill is the one that hides in the cupboard from the outside world until Sunday when she liberates herself from the dark room. She lives her social life through the lives of the people around her. She believes she interacts with the outside world and that she had a vital role in the play that the world undergoes. Miss Brill soon learns that her presence does not have a great impact on her peers as their presence does on her. During the performance of the band Miss Brill pays more attention to the conversations of the people she sits next to then the performance. As she ease dropped on a young couple she over heard them mocking her. Miss Brill realizes that she does not have the same importance to them as they do to her. Her chimerical world bursts as she becomes exposed to the real world and the realization of  her importance. The comprehension of the real world has a severe importance to Miss Brill. If Miss Brill did not come to a realization of the outside world she would follow the footsteps of Willy Loman from A Death of a Salesman. Willy Loman lacked realization of the real world just as Miss Brill did. His delusional behavior and lack of connection with the real world lead to his suicide. If Miss Brill did not understand her mirage of the world she might have landed in the grave just as Willy Loman had. The protagonist Miss Brill faces the antagonist of reality. She comprehends that she has lived in a fantasy world that revolved around her having the same impact on everyone as they do on her. If she did not come to an understanding she would have followed in the footsteps of the delusional Willy Loman who committed suicide. Mansfield parallels Miss Brill and her fur because both have aged and do not leave their boxes until Sunday. The story informs the reader that sometimes elderly and lonely people live in made up world and when welcomed back into reality have a hard time cooping with it.

What should be done with our solid waste

The amount of solid waste in the world's economically developed countries has been increasing dramatically during the 20th century. This is due to increasing economic affluence like increased consumption of ebergy and raw materials, the increased manufacture and transport sale. Also free constant demand for the products that does not last for long like toys. There is an increase in the amount the world, which requires considerable packaging. Also use of a wide range of variety of products cause the production of more waste. Many things have been done to solve this problem. But we have not managed to solve the hole problem, but there are some particular methods how to reduce the waste. The three methods i am going to include in this essay are the landfill method, the incieration and recycling.Landfills are facilities that serve as long-term disposal sites for community solid wastes. They are designed and operated to protect both the community and the environment from contamination. When properly operated, landfill sites can ensure clean groundwater and clean air in the community and environment. Proper landfill design will enhance the environmental protection provided by locating the landfill correctly. When selecting a landfill location it is preferable to have a site located in an environment that provides natural protection. Similarly, a site where landfill generated contaminants are naturally reduced to acceptable concentrations or are naturally contained is preferable. This is known as a site with abilities of natural self attenuation. Where self attenuation is not possible, it is necessary to construct a landfill facility in a designated area. Advantages A properly sited and engineered landfill offers much better control of the environmental and health hazards associated with waste disposal than a garbage dump or burning pit. After a landfill has been closed, the site is landscaped and can be converted into a park, tobogganing hills, golf courses, etc. A new landfill can also serve as an incentive for increased environmental awareness in the community. In communities currently using a garbage dump or burning pit, the regular collection of community solid waste and its disposal in a landfill encourages the separation and safe disposal of hazardous waste and can even serve as a starting point for a recycling program. A well-run landfill can become a source of pride to a First Nations community, allowing the community to serve as a model of environmentally responsible community solid waste management. Disadvantages A key disadvantage of the community solid waste landfill relates more to public perception than with a flaw in the solid waste management method itself. Many people, usually confusing the landfill with the uncontrolled garbage dump, react negatively and strongly to the idea of building a new community solid waste landfill in their community. One operational disadvantage is the difficulty in applying cover materials in winter months. To ensure the coverage of wastes in winter conditions, heavy equipment may be needed which may not be available in small communities. Secondly, a landfill also produces what is commonly termed â€Å"landfill gas.† This gas, which consists primarily of methane, forms because of the decomposition of organic wastes in the landfill. If allowed to accumulate in a confined space, landfill gas can pose a danger as an explosive. Because of the small scale of a typical First Nations community landfill, the low level of landfill gas produced, does not usually pose serious hazards to the community and to the environment. Also, depending on community size, landfills require a large land base to meet the community's current and future needs. Hauling waste off-reserve to a nearby municipal or regional landfill would better preserve a community's land base. Finally, constructing and operating a community solid waste landfill may require more financial resources than hauling waste off-reserve.

La violencia domà ©stica se da en un ambiente à ­ntimo, familiar, en el que las và ­ctimas pueden ser las mujeres, los nià ±os y tambià ©n los varones. Puede ser entre esposos, entre relaciones semejantes a las de matrimonio, como parejas de hecho, entre ex esposos o ex parejas o cuando abusador y và ­ctima tienen un hijo en comà ºn, aunque ahora ya no està ©n conviviendo.  Adems,  puede ocurrir en relaciones entre un hombre y una mujer o entre parejas del mismo sexo. Protecciones para las và ­ctimas de violencia domà ©stica Entre los derechos no migratorios que pueden solicitar las và ­ctimas de violencia domà ©stica destacan el de solicitar una orden de proteccià ³n o una orden de alejamiento frente al agresor. Es lo que se conoce en inglà ©s como una protection order o una restraining order. Se puede llenar una aplicacià ³n para una orden de proteccià ³n en una comisarà ­a de policà ­a (precinto), en una Corte, en los refugios y en las oficinas de abogados. Asimismo, en el caso de solicitar el divorcio en el caso de parejas casadas, se podrà ­a tener derecho a obtener una parte de las propiedades conjuntas. Tambià ©n se tiene derecho a obtener una pensià ³n para los hijos y podrà ­a obtenerse tambià ©n para la và ­ctima de la violencia. Los padres estn obligados a pagar una pensià ³n alimenticia a sus hijos menores de 21 aà ±os que no viven con ellos en el mismo hogar. El no pagar la pensià ³n de alimentos puede tener serias consecuencias civiles e incluso penales y migratorias. Se puede tener derecho a ser alojado en un refugio, a asistencia legal, a un intà ©rprete si hay problemas para entender o hacerse entender en inglà ©s e incluso podrà ­a tenerse derecho a ayuda econà ³mica. Todas estas protecciones cubren a las và ­ctimas de violencia domà ©stica sin importar su estatus migratorio. Protecciones migratorias para las và ­ctimas de violencia domà ©stica Dependiendo de las circunstancias de la và ­ctima, existen diferentes opciones: Peticià ³n para sà ­ mismo y para los hijos, segà ºn lo que se conoce como VAWACuando ya hay una orden de deportacià ³n puede pedirse lo que se conoce como Cancellation of removal o cancelacià ³n de la deportacià ³n.Y, para casos no comprendidos en los anteriores podrà ­a aplicar la visa U, que protege a và ­ctimas de violencia, incluidos los casos de violencia domà ©stica. En este punto de protecciones migratorias hay que destacar tres caracterà ­sticas. En primer lugar, estas aplicaciones son confidenciales, esto quiere decir que el abusador no lo va a saber. En segundo lugar, es muy importante contar con asistencia de un abogado migratorio con experiencia en estos casos. Estamos hablando de temas muy delicados y es importante asegurarse de que todos los pasos estn bien dados. Hay que evitar dar un mal paso y que la và ­ctima de violencia domà ©stica pueda acabar deportada, para ello lo mejor es asesorarse antes con un abogado con conocimientos y experiencia sobre este tipo casos. Y finalmente en tercer lugar, para los casos en los que no aplican las tres protecciones mencionadas es recomendable informarse sobre si pudieran aplicar las protecciones de la visa T, para và ­ctimas de trfico humano o las del Programa de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales.  ¿Dà ³nde buscar ayuda en los casos de violencia domà ©stica? Las và ­ctimas, sin importar su estatus legal, pueden marcar al 911 y pedir ayuda a la policà ­a. Adems, si han cruzado ilegalmente la frontera se les podr perseguir por esa falta, si es la primera vez o por ese delito, si es que ya han cruzado ilegalmente ms de una vez. Just because he didn't know about it before I started didn't mean he wouldn't start learning about it the moment I took an interest. There I'd be, running for everything I was worth on the cross-country team and he'd be there along the sidelines near the finish line - "Come on! Give it the extra effort now! Don't hold back!" Some of the other kids said they never heard their parents at that point, they were too exhausted and busy trying to keep their lungs from bursting. I was cursed again because I understood every word that came to me in that big, booming voice of his with the crackle of tension lying just under the surface. He had to avoid the 'stage dad' persona after all, keep up proper appearances. Author, Judith Moore of the book â€Å"Fat Girl† discusses some of the issues fat girls face. Her book is less about every stereo-typed fat girl and more about her story individually. Judith Moore chooses to take a different route, instead of complaining continuously about being fat, she explains in depth why she believes she is fat. She is not lazy; she expresses her knowledge of diets and her experiences of strenuous work outs but ends with little to no results. My flesh resists loss. My fat holds on for dear life, holds on under my bratwurst arms and between my clabber thighs. Food is a fuel, but to some food may be a pain reliever. For Judith, she had to face an unhappy family life early on. Judith had always been a fat girl and her father a fat man weighing close to 300 pounds. These trips back and forth only created more emotional scaring for Judith. Her Grandmother had a strong hatred for her father, and being that Judith was a spitting image of him, she received the backlash. Grandma fed Judiths needs literally and figuratively speaking. Each time she visited her Grandmothers farm she was fed extremely fattening comfort foods, and with that she grew larger. Her Grandmother would make comments over how large she was and how she was growing, breaking her down each time. This led to Judith’s reach for food to fill the hole created by her dysfunctional family. The love of food steamed from her unloving family. Her continuous pattern of eating to fulfill an emotional need led to Judith’s weight gain. Judith proceeds to explain more emotional traumatizing events in her life that are male influenced. She discloses information that a man once told her she was too fat to get in bed with, and her experience of being manipulated into giving oral head to a man who she thought was a kind person, while his friends watched and laughed. Not once throughout her book did Judith play the victim for being fat. Because Judith proceeds to tell the readers events in her life and why they make her who she is today, this book consider would be considered an autobiography. The book gives another perspective on another persons’ life. Judith’s obvious intention for this book was not to complain about being fat, but to state the events of her life that made her who she is. She did not stereo-type every fat girl, she simply told her story and ways other fat girls could relate. This autobiography presents an issue of correlation with our society and obesity. It suggests that obesity can come from emotional pain or distress. I would suggest this book to my friends, it explains that everyone has a story of why they are the way they are.

Essay example --

What do I want to be when I grow up? What is answer to that question lies in some self-evaluation. What are my strengths and what are my weaknesses? What do I love to do and what I hate doing with my time. What would be realistic in the next maybe 60-70 years, possibly even more life that I have life left? Do I want structure mighty tall towers that touch the sky? Do I want to manage tens of billions of dollars of people’s money? Do I want to be an artist? Do I want to start my own successful enterprises? Or, will I fall into poverty, wage slavery, financial misery, and do nothing? Do I just sit there with student loan debt and not take action. Do I let my time to be spent in a matter I would not like, but â€Å"forced† so? So, many questions, so many possible answers to consider, let us consider some ultimate goals that have many ways to fortune, happiness, and success. First what do I, not anyone else, consider a success to be? Does it mean fame, power, and influence? Does it mean secrecy and peaceful. It depends on which one gives me the most utility of my life. I consider one is a success is to have control over time, to not have being dependent on anyone. I do have to put â€Å"work† over everyone else. If I could I could just walk off the job if I wanted and not have to worry about my standard of living going down. That presents a choice for me today, what do I have to sacrifice today to achieve tomorrow’s results and goals? Can I careless about debt and ring up the cash register for little toys that are going to be worthless in the future? Besides the fact of student loans, will I take out auto loans, go into credit card debt, and lose precious years of compounding to debt? All of the years that I will need for paying debt for l... ...icked a job and give a surmise of it. But, I am purposely being opaque. It just makes life all the better for me. It leaves for the reader (including the writer that is reading the text as he writes) to decide. Clearly there is a road that I am going down, which lane I am going down is to be known later. The basic topic of this essay is what you want to be when you grow up. Frankly, I will never stop growing. I might have some roles when I am growing up. While others fear about age, I love what it can bring. Ubiquitous thinking, eh, so as the writing goes to formal to causal to formal again, I will not recap what we learned. The Symbol of Pearl in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter is a book of much symbolism. One of the most complex and misunderstood symbols in the book is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Pearl symbolizes a real and constant reminder of Hester’s sins, she is much more prominent and evident than the â€Å"A† that Hester wore, for she is a real living breathing person who will always remain a part Hester. Hawthorne places Pearl in the novel to explore the theme of Romanticism, to create a character who is passionate and true, one who questions the behavior and values of Hester and Dimmesdale. Pearl’s behavior towards her mother varied at different times. She would often constantly nag her mother and became infatuated with the scarlet "A" which her mother wore. She is anything but a normal Puritan child, and Hawthorne creates her character very interestingly. â€Å"The child could not be made amenable to rules. In giving her existence, a great law had been broken.....† (91)Pearl was so very aware of this â€Å"A† even if she did not fully understand the meaning of it at her young age. Although, she did have a sense of what this letter meant, and would also make her own to wear. â€Å"Mother, the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. Now see! There it is, playing, a good way off. Stand you here, and let me run and catch it. I am but a child. It will not flee from me, for I wear nothing on my bosom yet† (192). This symbolizes Pearl’s constant curiousity and truth, and her knowing that the letter her mother must wear retricts her from being ‘loved by the sun’, in other words, Hester must remain in the dark about her feelings, while Pearl can stay in the sun. Again another example of Pearl’s free emotion, a symbolism of the Romanticism in the novel. Although Hester had so much trouble with Pearl, she still felt that Pearl was her treasure. Being alienated from society and without Dimmesdale to confess his part in the sin, Pearl was really the only thing that Hester had in life. Hester cherished Pearl’s existence, though she was born out of what Puritans considered a sin. Here, Pearl symbolizes a person that Hester can hold on to and call her own, when it seems as though she has nothing left in the world.

BACP Ethical Framework Focus Essay

Considering a way to ethically monitor what I do with clients is a really interesting area for me. I said to my supervisor very early on in our working relationship that there was no way for her to know if any work was actually taking place in the room, because there was no practical way to observe my practice. Although this was part in jest, I am genuinely intrigued that there is so much work going on around individuals’ welfare, with no real way of ensuring it is healthy, productive, professional and appropriate. My supervisor told me that, if work was not occurring, then this would be clear in supervision, and my retention of clients. I have kept this in mind if my thoughts have ever wandered since. I think, for me, there is a level of confidence, I can only hope this comes as a result of a level of competence. Within OnTrak it has been mentioned by my supervisor and senior staff that I am successful at retaining what can often be a very sporadic client group. I think that the young people I work with must be getting something from the process, or they simply would not return! OnTrak work to ensure clients are aware of the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy from their initial assessment. It is covered (along with the agencies specific policies) during a client’s assessment with a senior practitioner. The core components are then covered by myself at the first session and then covered as and when necessary. An example of this would be a client who missed a session and, at the next session, told me he had done so because he was not entirely sure of the confidentiality boundaries around criminal activity. He had missed the session because he ‘knew I would make him talk about it’, after subsequent discussion we worked to clarify this to mean he would want to talk about it on some level, and knew I would encourage this as an empathic result. By restating the confidentiality conditions I was able to reas sure the client, and positive work continued. I think, like any profession, there will be bad counsellors in operation, I believe that the reasons for (and importance of) working within an ethical framework ensure that clients can, at the very minimum, be met by an individual who will do no harm, even if they are not able to help the individual progress with their issues. In order to ensure that my relationships with clients are bounded by this professional framework they are invited to discuss the ethical guidelines throughout the  sessions, and encouraged to research any areas they are unsure of on the BACP website. When we did an exercise in class around the contracting and boundary setting that takes place in our own sessions some class members thought mine was a bit lengthy. In my experience my initial contracting would have been fairly focussed but, with experiences of subsequent clients, I have found it necessary to include more areas for the client to be aware of, which lengthens this initial exchange. As an example of this, I was approached in a bar by one client’s friends who asked about our counselling relationship. The client has obviously pointed me out, and this led to the encounter. I politely declined talking about any client issues, using client confidentiality as the reason, and have been really clear with subsequent clients what expectations we have if contact outside of the counselling room occurs. Considering the values covered in the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, I think three stand out for me: Ensuring the integrity of practitio ner-client relationships. This is key to me due to my professional background alongside these studies. I work at a local school and the pastoral role I have means there are frequent occasions where young people can be in a state of incongruence and display a lack of consequential thinking. This means it is crucial to be empathetic, but also aware of self-preservation too, both emotionally (to avoid transference) and also professionally (to avoid any questioning of professionalism or allegations of inappropriateness. I have found this lends itself really well to my counselling practice as I am hyperaware of any situations that could be misconstrued, and believe I can interpret clients struggling with boundaries in their own awareness. One female client was displaying inappropriate sexual overtones, so this was discussed with my supervisor and addressed within subsequent sessions. Fostering a sense of self that is meaningful to the person(s) concerned. With the clients at OnTrak, so m any of their presenting issues can be attributed, at least in part, to an unawareness of self. Often exacerbated by a need to be what others (parents, teachers etc) believe they should be. For me, the real turning point is when these young people find their own voice, as I have managed to do myself, then they also begin to see that they can create their own sanctuary. Striving for the fair and adequate provision of counselling and psychotherapy services. This one represents somewhat of a challenge for me,  personally. Within OnTrak we are a self-referral only agency. A group I struggle with, due to my own beliefs, is the client base with OnTrak who simply don’t want to be there. Although self-referral suggests clients have made the autonomous decision to enter therapy, we have a number of clients who feel coerced to attend, this can be through pressure from parents, or heavy suggestion from GP and/or school. Due to my own reticence to access personal therapy, and feeling obligated to attend sessions. I can relate to clients who are in therapy against their will, I empathise with them (perhaps there is an element of envy as well!) and encourage clients to move on if they are not in a place to access therapy positively. Therefore, whilst I feel 100% that we have adequate facilitation of a therapeutic practice, I do sometimes question how ‘fair’ it is, from the perspective of clients who would rather be somewhere e lse. Something I have struggled with in many jobs since I returned from my time living and working overseas in the idea of professional standards. I am very reluctant to do anything which stops me from expressing my of creativity and style but, as this usually does not represent a very ‘corporate’ outlook, I understand there are some parts of my external appearance that clients may struggle with, particularly my tattoos and piercings. I resolved from fairly early on that it would be inappropriate to have my larger tattoos on show; I have experienced how judgemental people can be and did not want to risk the client-counsellor relationship to take on any negative connotations due to transference. There was one occasion that this potentially represented an issue, my supervision overran one week and, although I had allowed myself time to get changed, it meant that I would potentially be meeting a client in a top that revealed my chest tattoo. This offered several interesting areas of focus, my supervisor offered to give me a lift to my home to get changed (I saw this as blurred lines, so politely declined), the supervisor was the one who initially highlighted there may be an issue (which raised the familiar sense of being judged) and it meant the client session would start a little later on this occasion, which could impact the client and myself. I think there is a definite expectation of clients (particularly being young at OnTrak) and I do not necessarily embody that. Clients have mentioned on several occasions that I am not what they expected, and I think sometimes I struggle with the behaviour, dress, and communication with professional peers due to my issue  with supervi sion and being submissive. I believe I have competence and integrity when it comes to my clients’ wellbeing, but this sometimes goes missing when dealing with colleagues. I have the same perspective to my counselling as I do in my role at the school, to use the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy’s ideas of ethical principles I put great value in beneficence and justice. The clients (or, in my professional capacity, the students) are key, and thus they occupy most of my concern. This can put me out of sync with colleagues and classmates as I struggle to see the link between peer feedback & guidance, and professional progression. I am working to build bridges with colleagues, my supervisor and classmates, but I think there is a definite desire to relate to the clients, not the ‘experts’. Although I have been at the agency for three years, I already have quite a varied anecdotal base of experience to draw from. Specific training at the agency allowed me to look at areas that may be accessed (consciously or unconsciously) while dealing with this client type, this fosters a sense of competence, but also resilience to the issues these clients may be bringing. There have been cases where I have had to consider my limits as a trainee, particularly a client who brought legal issues to our sessions. After disclosing her experience of sexual abuse from a sibling during one of our sessions I signposted a client to the local sexual assault centre. This was done after discussion with my supervisor and senior staff at the agency, and involved one of the senior staff joining us for part of a session. I initiated that, as I wanted to ensure the client’s needs were being met, but accepted that I may not be best placed to do so at the time. Another client believed her cousin w as having inappropriate relationships with minors. Again, this was explored away from the sessions to help me see where I was struggling, and how much of my ‘self’ was potentially playing out in the sessions. The outcome of this was that a youth worker at the youth club where this boy was meeting young girls was made aware of his activity (with the client’s permission, and direction) and acted according. One of the things my supervisor and senior staff at the agency acknowledge is my ability to recognise my responsibility to clients. When I started at the agency I had my probationary period extended by six months. This was not due  to my inability to work with clients (which was made clear to me), but a result of my poor administration. Initially this was a struggle, I was working well with clients, having positive outcomes and keeping clients engaged, but I have since realised there is a responsibility I have to the wider profession. With CORE forms and client notes (for the agency, not myself) there was an initial distrust as I felt they were just box ticking exercises (in truth, a part of me still believes this!), but I now realise they are necessary parts of the process, to ensure the continuation of the agency, and the appropriate records are kept for clients. There is still a sense that I am a child in an adult world for me. Not just in my studies, but in life as a whole. Thi s means I can sometimes struggle with expectations of my own conduct within my training group and in the agency setting. As I have said, I believe my time with clients is appropriate, positive and productive, but there is a definite need to be seen as a team player and contributor, which I have often struggled with. There are times I will say things in class, or to colleagues in the agency that represent me as an individual, rather than as a professional. I think the gap between these two ‘sides’ is getting smaller as a result of my personal therapy, and just getting older, but there are still times when I feel the need to censor my views. Unfortunately, this is often retrospectively! I believe I can competently demonstrate professional standards in my therapeutic work, but there is still a side of me that can cause issues for me when it comes to peer relationships. However, the solace from this is something I feel within the counselling relationships I have. There is something about being in emotional contact with someone at that level that just unlocks empathy, sincerity, respect and humility in me that I struggle to access away from those sessions. I find that as a client as well, not just a practitioner. I agree that the challenge of working ethically means that I will inevitabl y encounter situations where I have competing obligations and perceptions. I believe that I have the courage to seek support and advice, to ensure that there are no ‘heroic’ actions I take in haste, which may result in dangerous decisions and consequences for my clients, or myself.

(The striker may, however, follow the shuttle over the net with the racket in the course of a stroke. ) If a player touches the net or its supports with racket, person or dress, invades an opponent's court over the net with racket or person except as permitted. – If a player invades an opponent's court under the net with racket or person such that an opponent is obstructed or distracted or obstructs an opponent, that is prevents an opponent from making a legal stroke where the shuttle is followed over the net. – If a player deliberately distracts an opponent by any action such as shouting or making gestures. If the shuttle is caught and held on the racket and then slung during the execution of a stroke. – If the shuttle is hit twice in succession by the same player with two strokes. – If the shuttle is hit by a player and the player's partner successively or touches a player's racket and continues towards the back of that player's court. – If a player is guilty of flagrant, repeated or persistent offences under Law of Continuous Play, Misconduct, Penalties. – If, on service, the shuttle is caught on the net and remains suspended on top, or, on service, after passing over the net is caught in the net. Lets ‘Let' is called by the umpire, or by a player (if there is no umpire), to halt play. A ‘let' may be given for any unforeseen or accidental occurrence. The rules of badminton consider the following as ‘lets': – If a shuttle is caught in the net and remains suspended on top or, after passing over the net, is caught in the net, it shall be a ‘let' except on service. – If, during service, the receiver and server are both faulted at the same time, it shall be a ‘let'. – If the server serves before the receiver is ready, it shall be a ‘let'. If, during play, the shuttle disintegrates and the base completely separates from the rest of the shuttle, is shall be a ‘let'. – If a line judge is unsighted and the umpire is unable to make a decision, it shall be a ‘let'. – A ‘let' may occur following a service court error. When a ‘let' occurs, the play since the last service shall not count and the p layer who served shall serve again, except where in situations where the Law of Service Court Errors is applicable.

Fall in and dulce et decorum est Essay

During WW1 war poetry changed dramatically. At the beginning of the war, in 1914, propaganda poems were a popular technique to encourage men to join the army to fight for England. Harold Begbie’s ‘Fall In’ was a typical highly patriotic poem that persuaded men to enlist. However, poetry changed at around 1916, after the Battle of Somme, when thousands of men were killed. Soldiers like Wilfred Owen’s wrote poems showing the real terrors they faced in war. Both poems are war poems and both poets use different language techniques to provoke the reader’s feelings. This essay will compare ‘Dulce et Decorum est’ and ‘Fall in’ by looking at the language, structure used and the poets’ attitude towards war. Begbie uses many techniques to make men want to enlist to fight for their freedom in ‘Fall In’. This poem was published as a ‘call to war’ in newspapers and magazines. Highly patriotic poems are also known as jingoistic poems and were very popular at the beginning of the war, as they persuaded men to enlist. We see an example of a patriotic phrase in stanza two; ‘In the war that kept men free? ‘ This implies that England was free before the war and by joining the war the men are helping to keep England free forever. This is patriotic, as it is saying how good England was and how everyone had there freedom. Men liked their freedom and so enlisted. Also; ‘And Right is smashed by Wrong? ‘ supports the idea of patriotism, as the word ‘Right’ describes England and ‘Wrong’ describing Germans. Meanwhile, Owen’s poem is based on his own war experience, and his poems convey the pain, and suffering the soldiers encountered by using a range of similes, metaphors and onomatopoeias; A simile; ‘Coughing like hags’ illustrates how weak and ill the soldiers are. The metaphor ‘Knock kneed’ emphasizes how tired the men are as if they are about to collapse as their knees cannot support them anymore. The onomatopoeia in stanza three presents the poem in a more realistic way; ‘Come gurgling from his froth corrupted lungs’ uses the onomatopoeia ‘gurgling’. The reader can almost hear the painful sounds of the dying man. Secondly, Begbie says that soldiers who go to war will not be mocked and will be loved for their bravery when they come back. The poem threatens the reader that if he does not enlist, he will be looked down upon and we see this from the line; ‘But what will you lack when your mate goes by with a girl who cuts you dead? ‘ The words ‘cuts you dead’ support the same idea. ‘When the girls line up the street shouting their love to the lads to come back’ shows that girls will praise and love the soldiers who come back from war. Men like having lots of attention and will therefore join the army. On the other hand, Owen presents a very different view. Owen believes that soldiers will be destroyed and traumatised forever after the war; ‘In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, he plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning’. Here, Owen talks about how endless nightmares tortured him every night. The nightmare was described vividly to the reader, so those who want to enlist will think about the consequences. When Owen says, ‘In all my dreams’ it shows that he saw the man every night. He was badly affected after seeing the horrors in war. Many soldiers were badly traumatised after the war and had to be taken to a psychiatric hospital. This is the opposite picture Begbie creates; there are no cheerful soldiers being chased by women. Thirdly, Begbie uses a question and answer structure to make the reader question why they are not going to war. For instance, ‘How will you fare, sonny, how will you fare in the far-off winter night’ is one of Begbie’s questions which occur at the beginning of each stanza. The poem assumes that man is going to live. Most people are scared of death at war, but the way that Begbie assumes the reader will survive makes the reader think that it is an easy war and, so, it is not a problem joining the army. Also, the way Begbie uses the word ‘Sonny’ displays the idea that he is older that the reader and most young men, at that time, respected their elders very much and would listen to what they said. The answer; ‘Will you slink away, as it were from a blow, your old head shamed and bent? ‘ would make the men who are not fighting want to enlist, as they know it could happen to them one day. Conversely, ‘Dulce et Decorum est’ has a much different structure. Here, Owen describes what trench life is like and then follows on to describe a gas attack. There is no question and answer structure and instead every alternate line rhymes. The first stanza tells us of life in the trenches, and Owen emphasizes how weak the soldiers are. The second stanza describes a gas attack, and the third stanza describes what a gas attack does to its victim. Finally, Begbie’s attitude, which is shown in ‘Fall In’, is that all men should go to war. He is saying that all men should enlist and fight for their country. The last sentence; ‘When your brothers stand to the tyrant’s blow and England’s call is God’s! ‘ demonstrates that Begbie expects all men to fight against the ‘tyrant’s blow’ as ‘brothers’. He also compares England’s call to God’s call showing that he thinks that Gods thinks that all men should fight against the Germans and their allies as well. People who were very religious might have thought that war was a chance to prove to God that they were brave and faithful to their country and should go to Heaven. In opposition, ‘Dulce et Decorum est’ has a different attitude. Owen’s poem says why men should not enlist and that death in war is unnecessary and inevitable; ‘the old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori’ this means that it is not sweet and right to die for your country. The words; ‘The old Lie’ proves that Owen disagrees with it being sweet and right to die for your country. We also see that Owen has a negative attitude towards other propaganda poets. For example; ‘My friend, you would not tell with such high zest’ proves that he is against men being told to enlist; ‘My friend’ implies that Owen is talking to a propaganda poet such as Begbie. He does not mean ‘My friend’ and is using sarcasm. He blames the propaganda poets for making so many men think war is good and making them enlist, causing many deaths. Many people, when war was just announced, were extremely eager for it to start since they thought war would be over in a few months. The saying; ‘Over by Christmas’ was what everybody expected. However, the war lasted much longer then that-a total of four years. After the Battle of Somme attitudes started to change dramatically, since hundred thousands of soldiers were being killed per day! Wilfred Owen started writing about what the soldiers had to confront during this time, and war did not seem so honourable.
